Sealants and fluoride

Larch & Finch Pediatric Dentistry applies sealants and fluoride to children's teeth in Seattle, Washington, at regular checkups.

A thin coating and a mineral varnish that help protect the back teeth, painted on in a few minutes.

Overview

Sealants are thin, clear coatings that fill the deep grooves on the chewing surface of back teeth, where food and bacteria hide. Fluoride varnish is a mineral paint that helps strengthen the outer layer of the tooth.

Neither one needs a needle or a drill. The dentist tells you which teeth would benefit and why, and you decide.

How it works

  1. The dentist checks which teeth are ready, usually the first and second permanent molars
  2. A hygienist cleans and dries each tooth
  3. The sealant or varnish is painted on, and a small light sets the sealant
  4. We tell you what to skip eating for a few hours, and when we will check it again

Frequently asked questions

Does a sealant hurt?

No. It is painted on the surface of the tooth, and nothing is numbed or drilled. Children mostly notice the taste of the varnish and the small blue light.

How long does a sealant last?

Sealants often last for years. We check them at every cleaning and touch them up if a piece wears away.
